The Storm

When you left, that’s when the storm came.
I could see the grey clouds in the distance, slowly rolling in –
Spreading themselves across the sky,
Shrouding the golden rays of the sun.
I could feel the air thicken as it began to rain.
The first tear fell from the sky, landing on my skin–
The first of many.

In the distance, a bolt of lightning split the horizon
I counted five seconds before I felt the humbling quake of the thunder.
One mile.
The storm a short distance away, I felt its presence
My heart aching, pounding against my chest as the wind roared!
It was then I took shelter behind red, brick walls and heavy, wooden doors.
Lightning struck again; I counted.
The storm had arrived.

Though this is not what I intended to share with you all today (yesterday?…I kind of missed my deadline), it is tied to a subject that I am planning on getting further into in the near future.

I am inexperienced – this much I know to be true, and I assume will always be true. It is my job as a human being to experience life. It is also my job as a writer to write about my experiences, and hopefully move and/or inspire others when they read about them. This poem came from a handful of experiences from my recent past, such as having to say goodbye to some loved ones and seeing a group of people at my place of work somewhat taken back by a short, yet very powerful storm.

That being said, I hope to perhaps write a little bit about the things I experience in life and how they contribute to my writing (or will contribute). Nothing too personal, but just enough to let people in on how I pulled a rabbit out of a hat–not necessarily how that rabbit got in there (that part I am not so sure of myself).
